Solving One of the Industry’s Biggest Issues
Construction renovation is always challenging. It’s a slow and demanding process, and there is massive waste just to get things done correctly. Exyn Technologies argues that they can reduce some of the waste using drones.
However, the reality is that these drones won’t install windows or even lift a hammer. Instead, they are there to use 3D laser scanning services to map the space and upload data to BIM (building information modeling) platforms. Data from such 3D laser scanning will guarantee everything stays on track. Typically, the drones will create a digital twin of the evolving construction site in real-time.
How 3D Laser Scanning Services Can Be Used
The 3D laser scan technology won’t be used for small-scale renovations. However, the technology is designed to be used in the $1.5 billion stadium and other costly construction sites.
Based on McKinsey’s study, the global construction industry is an $8 trillion industry, and according to CEO Nader Elm, about $3 trillion of the industry amounts to waste and inefficiency. Elm notes that most construction waste is associated with wrong information. 3D laser scanning services could be the ultimate solution to reduce such waste.
Construction often goes wrong because many things are completed at the wrong time. For instance, a wall can be installed before the appropriate wiring is laid. The problem with information is that it passes slowly through the required channels, from subcontractors to contractors and supervisors. Without 3D laser scanning services, mapping projects will frequently waste countless hours.
Exyn’s solution aims to use autonomous drones, which are usually used for GPS-free mine mapping. COO Ben Williams notes that things are always moving in a construction environment. He adds that things are always changing in this dynamic environment. Someone will move a truck, a forklift, or a bag. As a result, it’s important to have a system that can respond instantly to such environmental changes.
Drones expected to operate must continue working even in the midst of obstacles, such as losing GPS signals. If these drone challenges are mitigated, a lot of labor costs could be saved.
The goal is to use 3D scanning services to create a model of the physical environment. Before digital twin technology was introduced, if one wanted to know the status of a construction site, they had to visit in person, Williams noted. After that, several digital pictures had to be reviewed. Digital twin technology can streamline such processes to ensure more can be done in less time.
