3D Laser Scanning Services: Drones Used for 3D Modeling of Shenyang Imperial Palace

palace dates back to 1625

Ever heard about the Shenyang Imperial Palace? If not, well now you will. The Shenyang Imperial Palace is thought-out to be the second most aged architectural complex of the Qing Dynasty. The historical building was constructed in the year 1625 and was later finished in the year 1630. The structure is divided into three sections and comprises more than 300 rooms.

In previous years, researchers have been putting to use 3D laser scanning services and other cutting-edge technological tools such as drones to conserve the antique from the sovereign nation. A drone is suspended above the building and collects data by taking as many photos as possible around the three-dimensional model hall.

According to the researchers, the drone was able to collect over four thousand large images from different angles and positions. Xia Xinyu, an engineer at Geotechnical Investigation and Surveying Research Institute Corporation, explains that the accuracy of the photographs was obtained at a centimeter-level and the location captured through a high-precision GPS.

This technique enables the preservation of the relic in a digitalized manner, detailing the patterns of the wall and even the precise coordinates of the building.  According to the president of the aforementioned cooperation, the 3D scanning services, and close-range photogrammetry through aerial vehicles; help to create a real-time digital counterpart of the physical historical building. This is an effective way of protecting a full chain of information on cultural heritage.

Protecting History With 3D Laser Scanning Services

Reports from researchers indicate that there is a need for concern over the effects of brutal weather conditions on historical sites. Other potential threats that contribute to the need for protection include theft, social unrest, and illegal excavation. Through high technology and 3D scanning services, we are able to restore historical sites as well as help in conserving them.
