3D Laser Scanning Services: Using Digital Twins to Regulate a Canal’s Water Storage Capacity

Scottish Canals used digital twin flooding modeling to regulate water storage capacity and predict drainage routes. The 3D laser scanning services have led them not only to be able but also want in their area, which includes new housing developments with nature preserves.

A Conversation About 3D Laser Scanning Services

Robinson: When people turn their backs on old ways of thinking, it is up to us as a society and those who care about the future well-being of generations yet unborn to ensure that these traditions stay alive. The Smart Canal project aims to preserve our waterway canals by making them work harmoniously with today’s lifestyles.

Rebecca Willey, With the help of Autodesk’s Smart Canal 3D scanning software, canal managers can view live data on an hourly basis and forecast future trends. This way, they can make informed decisions about their vessels and save time for repairs or replacements before it becomes too late.

Robinson: The Autodesk software provides a digital twin of the canal, created by 230 years of data.

Willey: The digital twin is a virtual copy of your canal with all its vital statistics. The 3D laser scanning services software uses waterway sensors and forecast data to predict when flooding might occur, allowing for proper operation on time.

Robinson: Using 3D scanning services technology to make a canal more useful is brilliant. Relying on the data remotely from our project, we’ve been able to access information about what’s happening at the moment and change its functionality for future use by engineers all over Europe.

Willey: The Smart Canal has been such a success that before the project, it would have flooded if there had been rain. Now, the risk is eliminated for this area because of its ability to drain water efficiently and create storage in canals during periods without rainfall or floods.

Robinson: The scheme unlocked the potential of all that development; 3,000 new homes by utilizing a canal and repurposing it. We estimated that this will save 500 tons in carbon per year – so over its lifetime (60 years), we can avoid 3500 metric tons.

McCormick: When you’re in the heart of Glasgow, five minutes from downtown but feel like a world away.

Mitchell: As part of the community, I feel proud to be involved with such an organization dealing with 3D laser scanning services technology for positive impact. It makes me realize that so many people care and want nothing but what is best for everyone else in their groups.

Robinson: The community has started to grow due to this project. I only have to walk along the canal and go up till where development is taking place, but seeing houses being built makes it all worthwhile.

Willey: I am excited about the opportunity to help people worldwide through my work on this 3D laser scan project. I know that many different individuals will benefit from what we accomplish here, and it makes me happy to know I’ve been impacted in some way.

Robinson: In the 21st century, it’s almost like we developed the proof of concept for climate change. Proof that if you build these canals, everything will be okay because our technology is cool enough to fix anything!

McCormick: So you start to think of water as something you can enjoy.

Mitchell: It’s a fantastic aspect for wild animals and people.
