This campus has a storied history of 148 years, with more than 71,000 current students and 943 buildings , The university aimed to document its facilities to ensure it can serve all its students, faculty and staff by efficiently using every square foot on campus.
Our principal intent for this project was to develop comprehensive and accurate REVIT models of the thirteen million square foot consigned to us and quantify the volumetric calculation of the scanned area thus allowing the team to create virtual walkthroughs of the campus, redefining the way students and visitors make their way through campus and discover the history within each building. This would help the university in its plan to maximize the use of its buildings, while also allowing for the most accurate representation of its campus for virtual visitors.
The journey begins with our team collecting gigabytes of accurate data points on each building with our terrestrial 3D scanners and wearable mobile mapping systems allowing for increased mobility and speed while also ensuring accuracy is not sacrificed. This data is then registered and optimized in-house with our 3D point cloud registration software from Leica, Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS. The end product being precise 3D models with panoramic images that allow virtual visitors to come as close as possible to being on campus.

When our client mentioned that there were a variety of scenarios in which the scans were going to be used, we ensured that our deliverables would suffice for each use case. Therefore, the team’s deliverables included Revit models, 2D floorplans, and volumetric accuracy calculations.
The main application of developing 3D Revit BIM models for each building would be to ensure that the client possesses a model in which they can connect and access extensive data such as project design, scope, quantities . This allows the client to ensure that any changes made on the model will be immediately represented in every drawing sheet.
Our client will also receive updated 2D floorplans annotating individual rooms and spaces in each building. This information will also be documented into a spreadsheet software for our client to maintain.
Lastly, we will also be providing accurate square foot calculations of each building. This gives the client the ability to report accurate data about space usage. With this information, the client can understand how best to use a room or space and what options they have in replacing the function of the room or space.
To ensure our client received the most accurate and defined 3D models without sacrificing speed, we utilized two of the the most currently advanced scanners: The NavVis VLX 3 and the Leica RTC360 which provides extended mobility to scan complex areas rapidly. Concurrently, the team employed the Leica RTC360 scanner to develop a highly accurate backbone of each building to maintain accuracy and capture 360-degree color-images of the exterior of each building.
Our team employs the NavVis VLX for full 3D scanning of the interior of the buildings, ensuring each room is captured accurately with the scanners two LiDAR sensors and four cameras. The portability of the NavVis VLX and its ability to capture 600,000 points per second with its SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) technology.
The Leica RTC360 scanner is a lightweight terrestrial scanner which can scan up to two million points per second and capture HDR images in under two minutes. It allows our team to spend less time on-site scanning and more time using the Cyclone FIELD 360 software for automated registration in the field to ensure accuracy right on the spot.
The importance of accuracy in creating 3D models for educational institutions such as our client should not be understated. Individual rooms and spaces need to be accurately measured to ensure that the 3D model is representative of the physical building as a whole.
Our 3D Revit BIM Models will also allow the client to work with the EMS department to develop pinpoint accurate mapping for emergency services to swiftly reach its intended location when time is of the essence.
