A theater is a complex form with few 90 degree angles. A handful of linear measurements, even at high accuracy with a single point scanner, is typically not going to be useful for many requirements. Theater 3D laser scanning can capture millions of points on complex walls or ceilings, or the pitch/grade of seating areas. Stage, backstage, and orchestra areas can be captured as well. 3D laser scanning can be used in the creation of accurate as built models to plan theater renovations or sets and rigging to ensure a design will fit the existing space and/or structure(s).

Scanning the theater space requires multiple scans with sufficient overlap to ensure accuracy in scan registration to provide a unified result that captures the complete space. Areas that are not line of sight from the scanner should be evaluated prior to onsite scanning to ensure onsite support with scaffolding or manlift to access areas that may not otherwise be captured, or require additional scanning time.
Given that theaters may contain hundreds or even thousands of seats, and that the focus of scanning a theater is typically the architectural elements such as floors, walls, ceiling etc., it is typical that the scans of the seating itself is largely incomplete. Therefore, if there is a requirement to capture seating in specific detail this should be identified during the quote process. It may require significant additional time and effort to capture seating to a higher level of detail and provide it in a deliverable format.
The initial result of the scanning is a point cloud and additional work is required to generate a CAD result. 3D models in common CAD formats can be provided, as well as 2D drawings or sections.
The CAD results can be a significant budget consideration, perhaps equaling or exceeding the cost for the scanning. Therefore, a requirement for CAD should be considered and built into the budget simultaneously with any scanning requirement.

The total cost scan a theater space and provide results can be unique to the theater and the deliverable format required. RFQs for scanning should provide complete info about the space including photos of existing conditions, as well as elevation and plan drawings with approximate dimensions. Specific requirements for CAD should be identified on the RFQ as well.
